is chris christie right? this is make or break for mitt romney? >> i think he's got more at steak than obama. it's one of his last shots. >> jeanne cummings, as you're watching this back and forth, do you expect a confrontational debate or a polite exchange? >> based on what the reporting shows and the preparation of the romney campaign, they are looking to bring the game to president obama. he has to do offense and defense, very tricky in the first debate, and i think he's well prepared. he may surprise some people. >> mark, i want you to talk to me about all of the national polls we have gotten in the last 24 hours. cnn, politico, abc post, they all have something in common. what are we seeing here that's good for obama and what are we seeing here that's good for romney? >> what's good for obama is he's hitting 50%, where you need to be. if obama wins, it's going to be with numbers like those. if i'm mitt romney, i'm liking the fact the race is tightening a little bit. the question is whether this is natural tightening or is mitt romney really m

but what chris christie says is right as predicted if you're mitt romney. donors are nervous, and perhaps in christie's mind his assertion was an atelt to boost the morral of romney's supporters. the bottom line, if christie's aspirations do not come true, romney has bigger problems. people who pay no federal tacks and get government help, were, quote, inarticulate. >> we've had some missteps but at the end of the day, the choice is really clear and we're giving people a really clear choice. >> but when ryan was asked by fox's chris wallace whether the media is, quote, carrying water for barack obama, ryan took the bait and ryan wasn't the only one who thinks the media is preparing to game him a raw deal. >> i think it kind of goes without saying there is definitely a media bias. >> i think most media are left of center and therefore they want a left of center versus a conservative president like mom. >> it's going to be ups and downs and we know the media is anxious to write the romney/ryan comeback story. >> everybody is playing. we know some of the quest

i think if you are the president's campaign you're less worried about romney's numbers right now. on the one hand the 40% right direction is the highest it has been in 3 1/2 years and any incumbent heading in that is momentum. 53% say the country is headed in the wrong track. i think this for the president is not about mitt romney. those advantages, chuck, on china, foreign policy and the deficit aren't as strong as for usual republicans. and the final point i would make is i think the important thing for this election is that braump has a 52 positive, 42 negative image. mitt romney has a negative image. only two have had a net negative image at this point and one of them loss, george h.w. bush and romney needs to improve that dynamic. >> democratic pollster. thank you very much to both of you. we have to get back in the field. let's keep poling. just two days away from friday's jobs report. we will get a quick preview on wall street on the market run down. and then we are taking a trip down memory lane. the good, bad and awkward from past debates. why the moments still matter tod
